How to Choose a Marriage Celebrant

Updated: Jan 8, 2024

A marriage celebrant is a key part of your wedding ceremony. They set you and your guests at ease, and help you set your preferred tone for the wedding. But how do you choose the right one?

Here are 5 things that I feel matter most in your decision.

Communication Skills

Choose a marriage celebrant that is easy to talk with and listens to what you want. They should be able to draw on their experience and offer advice that helps you create the wedding day you desire. You want someone who can communicate clearly and promptly on their availability, equipment they can provide, costs and other important details.

Personality

Look for a celebrant who is confident, welcoming and has the personality you think would fit with your wedding. The celebrant is generally the first person your wedding guests hear from on the day and they need to have the personality to bring the room together, create the right mood, direct the action and deal with the unexpected.

Value

According to MoneySmart, the average wedding in Australia costs $36,000. Of course, there is a great variety around that average but in general, venue hire, catering, videography, photography and other elements can stretch a budget. Given that, it’s important to choose a celebrant who is affordable and has flexible options to suit what you need. They also need to provide genuine value for their fee. Ensure they offer a range of packages and understand the inclusions in each so you can avoid paying for things you don’t need.

Organisational Skills

Organisational skills are essential for as smooth, stress fee wedding day. Choose a celebrant who has a demonstrated talent for organising, documenting their responsibilities and delivering on the wedding day. You can ask them about their process and speak to others who’ve worked with them.

Feedback

Listen to people who have worked with your marriage celebrant and see what they have to say about all the above areas. It’s important to get independent proof that they can deliver on what they say they can.
